Audi TT Roadster 2.0

This is the car for people who not only want to have an Audi TT, but to be seen to have one too. And from the fact that Audi was able to claim, before the car went on sale, that there was already a six-month waiting list, it seems that this is a very tempting prospect.

As already discussed in our road test of the 3.2-litre V6 version, the TT Roadster has a cloth roof - one of the very best I've ever encountered, with excellent soundproofing - which can be folded or unfolded within 12 seconds.
That's quicker than any of the folding-metal jobs which define the increasing number of coupé-convertibles on the market, but it isn't the reason why Audi has avoided developing a similar system of its own. The official reason is that, since the metal roof and the mechanism required to operate it add a considerable amount of extra weight, it would not be possible to avoid compromising the road behaviour of what was always intended to be a sporty car.
But no TT of either this or the previous generation feels particularly sporty, and I don't believe that many customers buy it because that's the kind of car they expect to get. Style, surely, is what the TT is all about.
